The Roman Catholic Church has a new boss. His first gesture makes the world believe that a tipping point in the management side of the church could be reached: he bent on his knees before a staunch crowd awaiting their prayers.
The fact that the new Pope comes from Latin America must also be a plus. Hitherto, Europe had exerted major clout on the nationality of the Pope. Such a trait has impressed the public a lot, since the number of followers has been plummeting in Europe throughout the 1900s and the 2000s, whilst flourishing in other parts such as Africa or Asia.
There are two main concerns on the new Pope's mind: dealing with sex scandals and managing the Vatican's properties, including its bank.
Many people hold the opinion that the sex scandals have to do with the criteria on which church employees are hired: single men, expected to commit to a life of celibacy. Day in day out, life eggs priests on to love in the way humans do: fall in love, have sex, and eventually, nurture a family.
Despite this conflicted state, they are supposed to give advice and talk errant people into sticking to family core values from a blind perspective. Alas, many times they fumble in doing so, when not themselves succumbing to sordid aberrations. They are expected to spearhead humanity resorting only to their own spirits, but lacking in experience.
The second big issue would be the Church's coffers, or rather, the Church investment portfolios.
There are people claiming they should make do with only their robes and bibles. On the contrary, there are people in favor of a strong church taking care of its hoarded artistic heritage, whilst at the same time suggesting better ways to manage their wealth: building schools, hospitals or even companies in developing countries, rather than being concerned with the ups and downs of the Nasdaq Index.
A time of change is hoped for. Let the Church carry on with its (so far) nice work, while praying that Francis I remain loyal to his first gesture: humility, humanity and patience.
